Clichy Football club is celebrating after scooping the county and regional awards at the London Football Association presentation night. The presentation night is held to recognise the hard work of schools, clubs and volunteers across London.
In February 2006, Clichy FC was the only club in Tower Hamlets who received the FA Charter Award which shows that they are committed to good practice. Redcoat youth are now working in partnership with Clichy FC to create a football academy for young people.
The academy is open to young people from the age of 11 and gives them the opportunity to learn and develop new skill. The academy is run by young people who are qualified FA coaches.
This would not have been possible without the support from the Jack Petchey Foundation, Youth Opportunity Fund, Tower Hamlets Sports Council and the Football Foundation as well as others.

Clichy FC receiving their Award from FA Regional Development Manager, Martin Preston
Thirteen young people from redcoat youth project successfully completed their level 1 rookie’s award in table tennis. The course comes in four stages from rookie to expert and for every stage the young people complete and master, they are awarded a Dunlop Skills Award provided by the English Table Tennis Association (ETTA).
The idea for the course came about after consultation with young people who said they wanted to do more than just play table tennis for fun. The project was delivered in partnership with Grant solders who provided the coaches and Bishop Challoner School who provided the space.
After completing the course young people said
“This was excellent and gave me new skill and a better understanding of the game”
We are currently putting together a team to enter into competitions as well as going on to the following stages.
The idea is to get the young people complete and master the four stages and take them to a new coaching course, which is the Level 1 and Level 2 Certificate in Coaching Table Tennis course along with the Child Protection course and the Emergency Life Support course, by completing these courses the young people will be qualified and can teach other young people how to play table tennis.
Akram Hussain

Tower Hamlets Council is pleased to announce Akram Hussain a Member of the Redcoat Youth Project as the new Young Mayor of Tower Hamlets. He now takes over from Jahid Ahmed also a member of the Redcoat youth Project who has held the post for the last year.
The 15 year-old Stepney Green School student becomes Tower Hamlets’ second ever Young Mayor and will be the voice of young people in the borough.
The role will involve Akram representing young people across Tower Hamlets to ensure their views and ideas are listened to.
He will chair the Tower Hamlets Youth Partnership, attend important public events such as cabinet meetings and also regularly visit schools to speak to the borough’s young people about what they would like to see happen in their borough.
Akram said: “I'd like to thank all the candidates who stood for election this year and everyone who voted for me. “But most of all, I'd like to give a big shout out to all the staff and young people at Redcoat Youth Project for supporting me all the way.
“Without them, being the young mayor wouldn't have been possible.”
Along with all of the other candidates, Akram was asked to produce an election manifesto to explain what he would do if he was elected as Young Mayor.
Crime and the environment were two of Akram’s priorities, but he also wants to help improve the career opportunities available to young people out of work, training or education in Tower Hamlets:
Councillor Clair Hawkins, Lead Member for Children’s Services at Tower Hamlets Council leant a hand to the counting process and will work closely with the Young Mayor over the coming months.
She said: “Congratulations to Akram and his deputies – this is a hugely important role and I’m really looking forward to working with him and hearing what young people in Tower Hamlets want to see from the council.
“The fact that so many people turned out to vote for the election shows that young people in this borough really care about their community, and want to be listened to when it comes to the big issues.”
Jahid Ahmed
A commitment to helping young people feel safe and enjoy access to good facilities secured Jahid Ahmed the job of Tower Hamlets first ever Young Mayor.
The 19-year-old from Stepney was elected by young people from across the borough, in what was the highest ever turnout for a local youth election.
A total of 4,268 people voted in the Young Mayor elections, an increase of 36 per cent on last year’s elections for the Youth Parliament.
Jahid, a member of the Redcoat Youth Project, said:
“I would like to thank all of the other candidates who stood for election this year. I would also like to thank everybody who voted for me, and in particular all of the young people and staff at Redcoat Youth Club for all of their support and hard work.”
As well as promoting the views and voices of young people in the borough, Jahid will work closely with councillors in Tower Hamlets as well as attending conferences and events as a borough representative.
He will also be investigating new ways of involving young people in the decision-making structures of the council.
“I am looking forward to this great opportunity to make a real difference for young people across the borough,” he said.
“This new position of Young Mayor is a real opportunity to influence council decision-making at the highest level, and I am eager to make sure that all young people in Tower Hamlets get the best from their local council.”
Young people produce their first radio show in Partnership with Extreme East Radio. The programme was developed to help young people get a better understanding of how a radio show is produced. Young people had to divide themselves into roles such as producer, director, researcher, presenter and news reader. Having come up with a topic to discuss they went out and recorded vox pops while other created jingles.
Having done the show live on the internet young people said
“It was a great experience and I never thought I could actually do it”

“It’s helped boast my confidence a lot
